You have to feel it to heal it
Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based approach that helps people better understand, experience, and work with their emotions.
At The Stillness Space, we believe that emotions are not problems to get rid of. Instead, they often contain important information about our needs, relationships, and experiences. When we learn how to listen to and work with our emotions, they can become powerful guides for healing and growth.
EFT was developed by psychologist Dr. Leslie Greenberg and has become a widely respected and researched approach for helping individuals and couples create meaningful, lasting change.
Many of us learn to avoid difficult emotions such as sadness, fear, shame, anger, or vulnerability. Sometimes we push them away because they feel overwhelming. Other times, we may not even realize we're disconnected from them.
Unfortunately, emotions that are ignored or avoided don't simply disappear. They often show up in other ways, such as:
Anxiety
Depression
Self-criticism
Relationship difficulties
Feeling stuck or disconnected
Repeating the same patterns despite understanding them
EFT helps you safely explore these emotional experiences so they can be understood, processed, and transformed.
Together, we slow down, become curious about what you're feeling, and uncover the deeper needs and experiences beneath the surface.
Our emotions help us understand what matters to us.
They can tell us when:
We need comfort or connection.
A boundary has been crossed.
Something feels unsafe.
We are grieving a loss.
We need to stand up for ourselves.
Sometimes, however, painful experiences from our past can leave us carrying emotions that no longer fit our current lives. We may continue to feel shame, fear, inadequacy, or helplessness long after the original situation has passed.
EFT helps people distinguish between emotions that are helping them in the present and emotional wounds that need healing.
We have to feel it to heal it.
Many people come to therapy trying to think their way out of emotional pain. While insight is valuable, lasting change often happens when we are able to safely experience and process our emotions rather than avoid them.
In EFT, healing comes not from getting rid of emotions, but from learning how to understand and work with them.
